Festival of the Flowers in Medellín: A Burst of Color and Tradition

The Festival of the Flowers is a vibrant celebration that fills the streets of Medellín, Colombia, with joy, excitement, and peace. During the month of August, the city transforms into a unique stage where flowers take center stage. What makes this festival so special? Let’s dive in.

Origin and Meaning

The first Festival of the Flowers took place in Medellín on May 1, 1957, under the initiative of the illustrious Antioquian, Arturo Uribe Arango. Since then, this festival has been a tribute to the flower-growing legacy of the Aburrá Valley. Flowers such as the everlasting, carnation, sunflower, and orchid play a central role in the festivities.

Iconic Events

The Festival offers over 450 festive events, including the famous Desfile de Silleteros (Silleteros Parade), where flower cultivators carry their creations on wooden frames (silletas) on their backs. There are also musical stages in every neighborhood and activities like Arrieros Mulas y Fondas. The diversity of shows and scenes is unparalleled.
